Samad Shera

It is with deep sadness and regret that the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) announces the passing of Prof. Samad Shera, an Honorary President of IDF and eminent diabetologist from Pakistan.

Prof. Shera served the Federation for many years in a variety of roles at the regional and international level, including Chair of the IDF Middle East and North Africa Region and Member of the IDF Nominating Committee. He was also Founding President of the Diabetes in Asia Study Group (DASG) and actively collaborated with the World Health Organization (WHO), serving as Director of the WHO Collaborating Center for Treatment, Education and Research in Diabetes and Diabetic Pregnancies and member of the WHO International Expert Advisory Panel on Diabetes.

In Pakistan, Prof. Shera was Secretary General of the Diabetic Association of Pakistan and national coordinator for the Diabetes Prevention and Control Programme, playing a key role in the development of national policies. In recognition of his services in the field of diabetes and medicine, the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan conferred on Prof. Shera the prestigious civil awards of ‘Sitara-e-Imtiaz’ (Star of Distinction), and ‘Tamgha-e-Imtiaz’ (Medal of Distinction).

Throughout his long and illustrious career, Prof. Shera dedicated his efforts to raising awareness of diabetes, promoting the importance of a healthy lifestyle, and training health professionals to manage the condition.

Prof. Shera is survived by his widow and three daughters. IDF extends its deepest condolences to his family and friends in this time of grief.
