Diabetes caused 4 million deaths in 2017. Many of these deaths were preventable. 193 countries committed to achieving a 30% reduction in NCD-related early mortality by 2030.
The growing diabetes epidemic was an important topic when the United Nations General Assembly met to discuss non-communicable diseases on September 27, 2018.
The International Diabetes Federation commends the intention of Member States to scale up and accelerate the implementation of their previously agreed commitments and their recognition that progress and investment have been insufficient to meet target 3.4 by 2030. IDF welcomes the recognition that every person has the right to enjoy the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health.
However, IDF regrets the lack of ambition of UN member states and is gravely concerned by the omission – in the Political Declaration of the meeting – of the necessary monitoring mechanisms to track progress and make governments accountable.
